The Mediterranean Council for Burns
and Fire Disasters (MBC)

WHO Collaborating Centre
NGO in Special Consultative Status with
the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations

The MBC, Mediterranean Council for Burns and Fire Disasters (formerly “Mediterranean Club for Burns and Fire Disasters), is a scientific organization that brings together all the medical, surgical, nursing, public health and fire-fighting professions concerned with thermal injury and fire safety at all levels and in all forms. It encourages high standards of burn care and collaborates internationally to strengthen prevention, treatment and rehabilitation in burns and fires.

MBC has been recognized as the pioneering organization that emphasized the synergism between burns as a clinical, individual problem, and fires as a societal, disaster management problem, resulting in the improved care of fire victims and the prevention of burn injuries.

The objective of the Mediterranean Council for Burns and Fire Disasters is to involve the surgical, scientific and intellectual forces of all Mediterranean countries in an open exchange of opinion and action in order to analyse common themes, similarities and differences in the fields of prevention, treatment and functional recovery of burns and fire disasters.

The MBC strives to create a permanent dialogue on burns and fire disasters, a forum for the study and evaluation of the current situations in the various countries, to promote permanent contacts and comparisons with regard to clinical, therapeutic, scientific, nursing and training problems, and to endeavour to eliminate any gap that may exist.

The MBC is considered not only as a "league", a "pact" or an "alliance" willing to offer its experience, co-operation and medical expertise in any area of the Mediterranean. It is a Council of kindred professionals, and one of its main benefits is undoubtedly to bring together the various peoples and surgeons of the Mediterranean and promote professionalism and close ties of friendship between its members as well as burn specialists further afield.

In June 1997 the Mediterranean Council for Burns and Fire Disasters was officially designated by the World Health Organization as WHO Collaborating Centre for Prevention and Treatment of Burns and Fire Disasters. Subsequently the MBC was granted Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

The head-office of MBC is in Palermo (Italy) c/o
Divisione di Chirurgia Plastica e
Terapia delle Ustioni - Ospedale Civico e Benfratelli
